Chong Khneas Floating Village
The great Tonle Sap Lake dominates Cambodia’s geography. This unique water system varies in size from 3000 square kilometres to 10,000 square kilometres between seasons. The depth varies from two metres in the dry season to 14 metres in the wet season. A unique phenomenon takes place in the wet season when snowmelt and monsoon rains flow into the Mekong River. The vast quantity of water backs up where the rivers meet and forces the water in the Tonle Sap River to run backwards into the lake. It supports a diverse eco-system and is home to a vast range of birds, fish, reptiles, monkeys, turtles and otters as well as important wetlands and flooded forests. Tonle Sap is a major contributor to the nation’s fishing and agriculture industry and more than three million people live on its banks.
